2004 TOYP Winner Peter Doherty Humanitarian and/or Voluntary Leadership |

Peter Doherty is eighteen years of age and is the second eldest in a family of four. He is a native of Castlepark, Ballybane, Galway City. At the age of eleven, Peter was nominated for the Bán Justice Project due to his involvement in local sporting activities. The Bán Justice Project involves Foróige working closely with An Garda Síochána in community based and supported youth development projects. Peter captained the school basketball team at Móinin na gCiseach College for four years achieving three West of Ireland runner-up medals. Peter successfully completed his Leaving Certificate and has recently completed a Post Leaving Certificate course (PLC) in Sports and Recreation. He is currently studying for a National Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (NCEF) which will qualify him to teach Physical Fitness at level 1. Peter is a member of the Reserve Defence Forces transport unit, he is a 3* private and his ambition is to become a cadet in the Permanent Defence Forces and progress to a Commissioned Officer. Peter has been involved with youth clubs for the past seven years. Now he has become a voluntary Youth Leader with the Ballybane basketball club ensuring that they meet and train. He offers ten to fourteen year olds the same opportunities he has been given, instilling self-confidence and belief in them through encouragement and praise. In the basketball club he tirelessly works with many young teenagers who are daily at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour. Peter received a GAISCE award and was presented with a silver and bronze medal for his efforts in this project. The President's Award (GAISCE) is the National Challenge Award given by the President to young people in Ireland between the ages of fifteen and twenty five. In January, 2004 Peter was nominated for a Mayor’s award in the Sports & Recreation category by his local youth club, Foróige Ballybane. Due to Peter’s exceptional talent he attained the position of overall winner out of nine nominees and was presented with the inaugural Mayor’s Award for Galway City. | |
