Fun Training Day on Debating Skills

On Saturday, 13th February, JCI Dun Laoghaire held a “Fun Training Day on Debating Skills” in the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney.

Research indicates that public speaking and debating is among the top ten biggest fears a person can experience in their life. With that in mind, the purpose of the day was to learn and practice public speaking and debating skills in a relaxed environment among JCI members and young people in the ommunity. Mark Kelly, National President of JCI Ireland, noted in his blog that “debating skills are of great benefit to JCI members who are looking to present an idea at work to another team or when  forming an argument on why your project should be accepted”.  Experienced public speakers, Andrew Shortall and Sarah Naughton, gave valuable training on public speaking. Gillian Daly, President of JCI Dun Laoghaire, noted that “anyone who has to address an audience, whether it is a debating competition or a presentation at work, will carry these words of wisdom forward with them.” Catherine Laffey, an accomplished debater and trainer who was a member of the winning debating team at the JCI European Conference in 2010, gave an excellent training on debating techniques. James Corcoran, who has chaired debates at local, national and international conferences, including the JCI European Conference in 2010, gave an overview of the debating rules and what qualities judges look for in a debating team. James also kindly acted as chairman of the three debates. In the afternoon, there was a fun debating competition.  Emmeline Searson, who has represented Ireland in the JCI European Public Speaking Competition and also a member of the winning debating team at the JCI European Conference in 2010, was the head judge for the three debates. She also provided invaluable feedback to all of the debaters.   The day was a great success and a lot of hidden talent was unearthed. The judges had a tough decision to make in the final but decided that the team from JCI Fingal were worthy winners.  A special thanks to Catherine Laffey, James Corcoran, Suzanne Corcoran, Emmeline Searson and our organising team of Andrew Shortall, Gillian Daly and Sarah Naughton for an enjoyable day. Throughout the year, there will be exciting debating competitions at Spring Conference, National Convention, European Conference and World Congress. In addition, depending on the level of interest amongst members, there may be further debating opportunities and challenges between branches and other organisations, for example, Toastmasters.
